What is growing up jazz?

Teaching black history through the lens of jazz

A groundbreaking exploration of American history through the vibrant lens of jazz, Growing Up Jazz is a keynote presentation and extended program. Led by Andromeda Turre, Growing Up Jazz delves into the intricate ways in which our complex past has shaped jazz from its very beginnings. Participants embark on a transformative journey, enriched by lecture, listening sessions, video presentations, and interactive discussions. Andromeda facilitates a deep understanding of 'Growing Up Jazz' that leaves participants equipped with enhanced skills to broaden their musical appreciation and worldview.
While history is often told by those in power, Andromeda uses the music, history and culture behind Jazz to illuminate voices that have been missing from the broader American narrative for far too long. Teaching participants how to listen for these voices is key in unlocking a pathway to healing.
So why is this critical now? By the year 2030, the census bureau projects that 1 in 4 members of the US population will be a race other than white. As the cultures of our country expand, so must our ability to interface broadly. Both personal and professional success will require a more comprehensive perspective and an understanding of how to listen and learn from each other. Growing Up Jazz offers key insight and lays a foundation for building inclusive leaders.
